New OPTIWAVE 15xx series: 80 GHz radar technology with HART and Bluetooth for basic applications at an attractive price

With the OPTIWAVE 1520 and OPTIWAVE 1540, KROHNE presents two new 2-wire 80 GHz radar level transmitters. The two devices mark the start of the new OPTIWAVE 15xx series, which makes 80 GHz radar technology in combination with HART and Bluetooth available cost-effectively for basic applications.

OPTIWAVE 1520 and OPTIWAVE 1540 are extremely compact and come with a flush-mounted lens antenna and a robust PVDF housing. Both devices are waterproof (IP68) and can be used for both liquids and solids. They feature a very intuitive Quick set-up wizard and require no training or special operating skills.

OPTIWAVE 1520 is particularly suitable for use in confined spaces and in open-air applications. Typical applications include the measurement of sewage sludge, wastewater and treated water, e.g. in pumping stations, on screw lifts and above water basins. Due to its small beam angle, OPTIWAVE 1520 is also the right choice for small silos with granulate solids such as sand or for small tanks with internals as well as for level measurements that do not allow a dead zone. Within its measuring range of 0...10 m, the device offers a measuring accuracy of ±5 mm/0.2".

OPTIWAVE 1540 is resistant to many chemicals and contaminated liquids and offers cost-effective non-contact level measurement, e.g. in mobile containers (IBC tanks), in chemical tanks (up to 5 bar), in water/wastewater applications and in granulate solids silos. Thanks to its extremely high measuring dynamics, OPTIWAVE 1540 delivers reliable measured values even in the event of condensation or moving surfaces and fulfils high requirements for measuring accuracy (±2 mm/0.08" in a measuring range of 0...15 m/0…49"). The radar device can also be used as a simple flow meter in open channels to determine the flow based on the height and geometry of the venturi channel. In addition, OPTIWAVE 1540 is the ideal choice for reliable level measurement in combined sewer overflows, canals, and rivers, e.g. as part of a flood warning system.

Via the Quick setup wizard, both devices can be quickly set up and commissioned via Bluetooth using a smartphone or tablet and the OPTICHECK Level Mobile app. Alternatively, this can be done via HART using the OPTICHECK DTM. In addition, OPTICHECK built-in technology can be used to create extended device diagnostics or field verification without interrupting the process or a verification report on the device status with just one click.
