Protecting critical infrastructure: the KRITIS Pipeline Lifecycle Framework

KROHNE expands its offering for pipeline operators: the KRITIS Pipeline Lifecycle Framework helps operators implement KRITIS requirements.

The protection of critical infrastructures is a top priority. Therefore, the German government has passed the KRITIS law. It is intended to introduce both mandatory risk assessments, minimum standards for operators and central incident monitoring. These measures are to become an integral part of protecting critical infrastructure, in addition to existing cybersecurity regulations.

Pipelines are among the critical infrastructures. With PipePatrol, KROHNE has been offering the leading solution for safe and efficient management of onshore and offshore pipelines for two decades. It offers comprehensive modules for leak, theft and pipe break detection, as well as batch tracking and monitoring of tightness and lifetime stress.

The KRITIS Pipeline Lifecycle Framework is a new addition to the offering, and combines a range of services for critical infrastructure security: KROHNE experts accompany operators through the KRITIS Pipeline Lifecycle Audit, and supports them in meeting the verification requirements of the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI).

The support extends to all phases: in addition to on-site consulting and a preventive risk analysis during the planning of new pipeline infrastructures, a risk assessment of existing pipeline networks is offered with KROHNE PipePatrol Health Check. This initial risk assessment does not require the costly installation of a large system, but can be carried out with very little effort.

Specific recommendations and modules for mitigating risks such as leakage, sabotage and critical operating conditions are derived from the risk check. One of these modules, for example, is a software-based pipeline simulation that provides support in emergency scenarios such as supply outages. It helps to maintain the operation of the critical infrastructure according to the given circumstances and requirements. The last building block of the framework is a recurring PipePatrol Health Check Service for checking the risk status.
